Neles couberam as rotinas e os imprevistos, o trabalho e a família, a alegria e o desgosto, as viagens e as permanências, a ordem, o caos e sobretudo a espera.

"El Cuadernista" ("The Sketchbooker")
Notes on an everyday life between Lisbon and Madrid

These notebooks are a reflection of the past decade of my life. I tried to register on them my day-to-day as much as I could without giving more importance to some events than the others. Inside them have fitted routines and the unforeseen, work and family, joy and grief, trips and stays, order, chaos, and especially waiting. The wait for the birth of the first child, the wait for the arrival of the friend with whom we scheduled lunch, the wait while we walk the dog, the wait for the usual bus to come, the wait for our turn in a queue that stubbornly refused to move forward, the wait until we meet those we like again.
I wandered so much through these notebooks sheets, I tend to think that even the blank pages keep what I did not venture to say. The result of an accident, like so many others that we bump into in the course of a lifetime, I started drawing in notebooks for professional reasons unrelated to what motivates me to carry on today.
Drawing in them ceased to be a self-imposed task to become a space and time of freedom. A freedom made out of four paper corners where I lose and find myself at every moment. When I finish one of these notebooks, I close it and keep it without intention to leaf through it again. Now they open up all at once, revealing the lines with which I inadvertently mapped my experiences. Looking perhaps to create the illusion that life could fit in them.

Richard Câmara

This exhibition of Richard Câmara´s notebooks, concerning the past 10 years of his work, experiences and travelling, between Lisbon and Madrid, takes place at Camões Library from October 10th to November 6th 2015. At the opening and closing of this event, all notebooks will be in open cabinet showcases, free to be handled by visitors. In the remaining days, every notebook will be opened successively on a different page, so that this show changes every day while opened to the public. One of these sketchbooks with original drawings made in Madrid has been selected by the author to be drawn through a raffle system, which can be bought for the symbolic price of 2 € (2,25U$Dollars). On Friday, November 6th, the very last day of the show, at 8:30 p.m. (Lisbon time), the draw will be held in the exhibition hall of the library.
